ADAMAWA AND APC POLITICS: Muhammad Bindow Emerges Flag-bearer of APC for Adamawa Poll

Senator Muhammad Jibrillah Bindow last night emerged the governorship candidate of the All Progressives Party (APC) in the October 11 by-election in Adamawa State.

Bindow will contest against the acting Governor of the state, Alhaji Umaru Fintiri of the People Democratic Party (PDP).

The two contenders, who hail from the same Adamawa North senatorial district are to represent the two most popular parties in the state.

Declaring the outcome of the party’s primary last night,  the Chairman of the electoral committee of the party, Dr Garba Abari, who announced the breakdown of the  results, declared  that 6,232 voters were accredited while 42 votes were declared invalid.

Out of the 6,190 valid votes cast, Abari said Bindow scored 2,718 to beat his closest opponent, Alhaji Ibrahim Mijinyawa Yayaji, who polled 2,268 votes to emerge second in the race.

He stated that Boss Mustapha scored 515 votes to clinch the third position, followed by Senator Ahmed Barata, who scored 452 votes, while Chief Yakubu Tsala scored 187 votes and Mr. Emmanuel Bello scored 50 votes.

Meanwhile, former Military Administrator of Lagos State, Brig-General Buba Marwa (rtd), and Dr. Umar Ardo, have commended the leadership of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) for the way it handled the governorship by-election primary held at the weekend in Yola, the Adamawa State capital.

The two gubernatorial aspirants who participated in the primary election that resulted in the emergence of the state acting Governor, Ahmadu Umaru Fintiri, have both accepted the result in good faith.

Marwa stated this in a post-primary election press briefing held at his residence in Yola that every step taken during the election was appropriate and in accordance with the  party’s constitution.

He noted that as a good democrat, he has accepted the outcome of the primary in good faith and has already sent his congratulatory message to the acting governor.

He promised to support the aspiration of the acting governor for the party to emerge victorious in the forthcoming by-election, adding that he would collapse his structure into that of the acting governor to consolidate and  achieve a formidable structure to win the October 11 by-election.

Marwa also revealed that an agreement was reached between the aspirants and stakeholders of the party in Abuja prior to the primary election that whoever emerges as the governor on the platform of the party will not contest the 2015 general election.

Marwa thanked his teeming supporters who stood by him during his campaign tour adding that he has done his best by meeting with all the party delegates who endorsed his aspiration, adding that the election of Fintiri shows that they have changed their minds.

He said he refused to drop his aspiration ab initio because if he stepped down, his teeming supporters would be left in the wilderness, adding that it was unsavoury for him to cut from the race and leave the fate of his supporters hanging in the balance.

In the same vein, Ardo told  journalists that although he was disappointed with the conduct of the primary, he had nevertheless accepted the outcome in good faith.
Ardo added that some House of Assembly and House of Representatives members who joined the party recently were also allowed to participate saying by virtue of Section 9 of the party’s constitution, they should not have been allowed to vote or be voted for.

He noted that despite his problems with the exercise, he still accepted it as the election reflects the mindset of the delegates adding that he had since extended his congratulatory message to the acting governor over his victory.

However, the  former Executive Secretary of UBEC, Dr. Ahmed Modibbo, who was one of contestants of the Saturday primary said he was assessing the situation before making any comment.
